Earth is Blue: The Magazine of National Marine Sanctuaries was created to stand out in a digital world—a print piece so beautiful, no one would want to throw it away. As creative director, I led the magazine’s visual direction, designing all the page layouts and reusable templates. Drawing on my background as a publication designer for a national medical journal, I focused on clean typography, striking compositions, and immersive storytelling through imagery.
We printed just one issue per year, intending it to feel more like a coffee table book than a disposable magazine. With breathtaking photography from the public and sanctuary staff, each issue was crafted to be evergreen—something that visitors, partners, and even congressional members in sanctuary regions would proudly keep and share.
The magazine blended editorial storytelling with advocacy and visual celebration, highlighting the people, places, and wildlife that make up the National Marine Sanctuary System. It was a unique opportunity to elevate marine conservation through thoughtful, high-impact design.
